Personal Statement

I started university without having any college prep courses in high school because I went to technical high school for commercial art during my junior and senior years. At the placement office of the tech school I told them I was ready for work and they laughed me out of there telling me I needed a 4 year degree! Almost ten years later I graduated from the University of Michigan. I had to learn how to learn and part of that adventure was taking classes in Learning and Memory, The Psychology of Perception, the Psychology of Motivation as well as the Sociobiology of Women and others that gave me an understanding of how and why people do what they do. But I had to learn how to write in order to convince my professors that I learned the material and graduated from a University. I also married a man about 20 years later who had a son with extreme ADHD and became a student of the brain. Indeed, my husband had such severe learning disabilities, he couldn't spell--or read. I took reading for granted, because I've been a voracious reader since I was 4 years old--I couldn't conceive of a world without forming images in my mind from symbolic language. I taught my husband how to read. In order to help you or your child, I would require a pretest to learn some things about your 'learning style' and base my tutoring on those techniques which would enhance their ability to assimilate and retrieve information in a manner that demonstrates proficiency and skill. I love learning so much, I developed my own system for committing unrelated information to memory and how to retrieve it when needed. This was necessary in order to pass rigorous exams on homeopathic medicine profiles. I developed my own study guides through Word documents and iPod recordings.
