Personal Statement
I graduated from Berkeley Phi Beta Kappa and from UCLA School of Law on the Law Review.I have tutored privately and have assisted in the classroom as well. I have tutored my own children who have learning disabilities, and are taking honors classes with my support. Math has always come easy to me. I scored 740 out of 800 on the SAT. Still, my strong suit has become language arts. My vocabulary, spelling, grammar and writing skills have been finely developed from years of education and legal training.
I love kids. I have spent the last fifteen years in education, advocating, meeting with teachers and serving on committees with administrators. I have also taken educational workshops and spent years with learning specialists in the system. I sit on the Gifted Children's committee, Site Council, Special Education Parent Advisory Network and hold many Executive Board PTA positions. I am a life-learner who has taken classes of all types for many years. Learning is my passion.
I believe children begin with the love of learning. Curiosity and creativity are in us all, but are not emphasized as we mature. My teaching style incorporates educational psychology, encouraging the love of learning and building on intrinsic rewards. Teaching math involves drills, practice and making math seem relevant and fun. The mastery of the English language will distinguish us as adults. Spelling games and grammar songs make learning easier and fun. Students learn differently. Some are auditory learners, others visual and still others kinesthetic. I try to incorporate all three manners when I teach. Sometimes we touch puzzle pieces, other times we draw pictures.
Tutoring international students in English essay writing and grammar is another favorite. I have tutored college students from Korea and medical residents from India, to name a few. Since I love to edit, I am able to teach grammar rules and help students enhance their writing skills and understanding of the English language. As an added benefit, my students receive very high grades on their writing. I will not write an assignment for a student since he or she will not learn that way. Learning is the key.
