Personal Statement

I am currently a Chemistry Instructor at Madison College and a substitute science teacher and tutor at the University School of Milwaukee. In total, I have 7 years of teaching experience and an equivalent amount of research experience in the sciences. My methods are based on experience as well as current educational research and inquiry based strategies. I am very friendly and easy-going and have tutored high school, college, graduate, and adult learners. My students do not simply memorize the required material, but construct a conceptual understanding of the material in order to make lasting connections through inquiry, the Socratic method, and writing to learn. I have a BS in Biochemistry from Beloit College with extensive coursework in Philosophy and German as well. I have a MS in Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago with emphasis in Biochemistry. I have extensive research experience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Boston University, University of Illinois-Chicago, Northwestern University, Beloit College, and Argonne National Laboratory. I have studied abroad at the University of Copenhagen and the Danish Technical University and can speak Danish. I have traveled extensively. My wife has studied and traveled in Japan, and she is a graduate student in Anthropology and Museum Studies. I have taught laboratory and discussion sections in General Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. My students were diverse, many requiring remedial instruction and coming from varied educational backgrounds, so I am familiar with their specific needs and concerns. I have formal training in teaching methods, exploring research-based teaching techniques in inquiry and collaborative learning in the sciences focused on student-centered learning.
