Personal Statement
Hello prospective students,
My name is Nick and I am an undergraduate student at ASU on the Tempe Campus. My major here is Economics in the W.P. Carey school of business. My current grade point average is approximately 3.6 and I have completed 54 credits thus far (in various business and general education courses). I have a very thorough understanding of the fundamentals of micro and macro economics, and am continually learning more about these subjects as I progress in my studies. I also believe that I have a great understanding of the basics of financial and managerial accounting, since I received an A in financial accouting and am on my way to receive an A in managerial accounting at the end of this semester. I graduated high school here in Arizona and exceeded three out of four of the AIMS, coming close to exceeding on the reading portion. My ACT score, taken my Junior year of high school, is a composite 27 (Math 31; Science, Reading, and English at 25 each).
Although I have little "official" experience as a tutor, I still have done some tutoring in the past and continue to do so. Whenever my friends need help with and homework, most math or business related, I am usually the one to step up and give them the help they need. I am a very adamant student, and I believe my tutoring reflects this. I also have experience tutoring those who speak English as their second language. This comes from helping my college friends with homework when they can't understand all of it due to the language barrier, and also my time spent in Cambodia this summer.
While in Cambodia this last summer, I helped tutor students on a children's center in mainly English writing, reading, vocabulary, and grammar; although I would help with whatever they were learning in school. This proved to be a big learning experience but I can say that this helped immensely with learning new tutoring strategies.
My tutoring strategies are not the same for every student. This depends heavily on how much understanding the student has of the subject, what the subject is, and the student's learning style. I can not have one tutoring strategy to meet all the different learning styles. Therefore, knowing what to tutor and how to tutor is a case by case decision, and I believe it comes intuitively to me.
