Education and Qualifications

I achieved a 1600 on my SAT I (before it was expanded) and an 800 on my SAT II Writing. I graduated from a course in East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins University, with a heavy concentration in Japanese and Chinese languages. I passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test at level 2, and came less than 1 point short of passing the highest possible level, level 1.

Personal Statement

I spent a year in Japan using and communicating exclusively in Japanese. I also spent a summer in Shanghai studying Chinese. Combined with my high school and college experience, and my other qualifications, I can teach limited Chinese, a lot of Japanese, methods of writing (I can also edit papers), and how to perform on the SAT I and the Japanese Proficiency Test. My Japanese knowledge includes all the alphabets (including most of the Joyo kanji, or kanji for daily use), and formal, casual and colloquial grammar and vocabulary with appropriate usage. My Chinese knowledge is the approximate equivalent of three years of college study, and I can teach using both traditional and simplified characters. I am especially good at teaching languages: I am flexible and can plan a lesson in whatever material the student wants to learn, and I will use different media to make sure the student enjoys his or her lessons.
