Personal Statement
I believe that all children can learn!!!!
I believe that an interactive, lively, and energetic classroom will offer students various challenges and opportunities. Within our classroom walls are the roots in which we build on this past knowledge. Aspects of my personal philosophy of education are influenced by some of the ideas of John Dewey. From the start, Dewey claimed that education should reflect on the genetic differences and experiences in all students. I support the idea that in order for progressive education to be successful, I must incorporate the theory of experiences. Each individual student will bring to our classroom a variety of unique fundamentals and knowledge that only they may be familiar with. I can use these experiences and background knowledge as tools for present day learning and teaching. It is essential for me as an educator to be considerate of this in order to appropriately provide students with the skills to adapt in our diverse and ever changing society. I feel it is crucial for a teacher to incorporate each student's prior knowledge with new information.
As an aspiring teacher, I will take time to reflect back on my childhood as a student. Through both positive and negative experiences, I am able to compile valuable lessons learned and values that have been instilled in me. It is important to provide each individual student with a safe and secure environment with plenty of room for growth. Within the classroom walls, students must be allowed opportunities to make mistakes and to learn from them. They must respect themselves and understand that they are just as capable as any other student. Students must feel empowered to be independent thinkers and problem solvers. They have different ways of understanding, thinking, comprehending and they use techniques that work for them. Due to this fact, I am eager to utilize my creativeness to assist with meeting each learning style. Being given the chance to provide memorable hands on and visual experiences for students to reflect on and learn from, is a reward in itself. I anticipate that each individual student will be able to carry these concrete tools and learning with them outside of the classroom walls and into the society and community in which they are a part. These tools will assist them, as they become active participants of society.
As I take on the responsibilities required of me as an educator, I am prepared to learn and grow with the students as one. Together we can progress by setting a concrete foundation for communication, support, trial and error. Children are our future and the reason I choose to travel the growing path of education.
