"I graduated from Ball State University with a degree in Linguistics and Education and a minor in Spanish. I am currently working on my master's at Purdue University. I have a passion for teaching and helping students to truly understand content rather than to simply memorize it. I want to help students realize that learning can be enjoyable and that they can accomplish things that they didn't think they could.
Teaching math to elementary students is my passion. Students' attitude toward math begins in elementary, and I want to help students see math as something that is fun and that they are capable of doing. I believe in teaching math through hands on activities and manipulatives that help students understand math. Math is a way of thinking, and I want to support students as they learn to think in this way.
My specialization is helping students learn fractions. I wrote my Ball State senior thesis on teaching fractions in elementary school. As a part of this, I wrote a collection of lessons teaching fractions that align with the common core standards. These lessons focus on problem solving skills and hands on activities that will give students a deep understanding of fractions. This understanding will give them a strong foundation as they build on their math skills in the future.
I also tutor SAT and ACT Math. I scored a 780 on the math portion of my SAT and a 35 on the math portion of my ACT. Students that I've tutored in the past for these tests have told me that I explain things to them in a way that their teacher's never have, and their scores have improved significantly.
I will also tutor students who are learning English as a second language. My bachelor's degree at Ball State University focused on teaching students from different linguistic backgrounds. I took many classes on learning how to differentiate lessons to meet these students' needs while still valuing their native language(s). Over the last several years, I have tutored students in English from many different backgrounds, including Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish.
Please contact me if you would like to know more about me or to set up a tutoring session. I look forward to hearing from you." less...
