Personal Statement

Hello, If your son or daughter doesn't know that reading and writing can be fun I'd love to help them learn that. Whether or not they are learning how to read for the first time, learning English as a second language or need help with college essays or standardized test. I can help them improve their vocabulary, writing and reading skills. I have a BA in Philosophy and work as a theater manager, media arts lab teaching assistant and as a contributing writer and editor on a news blog. I like working with kids and helping them to enjoy reading, writing and media. I have worked as a tutor freelance for many years and recently as an elementary school after school tutor as part of an Americorp Vista Volunteer year. I also taught English as a second language at a high school in Thailand through an internship while completing my BA. I taught English at the Nai Soi Community Learning Center in Thailand for 4 months while completing my BA. My trip was funded by the Benjamin A Gilman Scholarship from the Institute for International Education. I taught English as what was often a fifth language to Thai and Burmese students age 13 to 30 and to 5 to 10 year old children at the Nai Soi government school's English Camp. I would work one on one with students and in a classroom setting on grammar, reading comprehension, vocabulary and conversations. Many of my students having been graduated from high school have gone on to college and to work as UN translators in the Burmese refugee camps. As an Americorp Vista Volunteer I worked at a community after school program in Yonkers NY providing homework help to elementary school students in all subjects. I also mentored the Teen Council and worked with them on community projects. Currently I manage a Movie Theater in Westchester, NY and work as an Experiments in Media Teaching Assistant at its Media Arts Lab with 12 to 14 year old students.
