Personal Statement
Dear potential tutorees and tutoree parents,
Here is a quick rundown of my tutoring methods:
First, I introduce myself and talk about my education, experience and expertise. I then ask the student (let's call him Jack) and/or parent(s) (let's call her Helen and/or him George) if I can answer any questions about myself. I answer honestly and thoroughly with the hope of "breaking the ice," so to speak. I follow this discussion by asking what area of English Jack needs help with or wishes to improve and carefully listen to both Jack, Helen, and/or George. I then ask additional questions to determine Jack's current knowledge and comfort level with the subject. By now we are sipping tea and conversing enthusiastically about current events.
Seriously, I assess and adapt to each student's needs or desires as individually as possible. I'm incredibly patient because I know what it's like to need and want tutoring. I don't get along with math and I'm certain that math hates me.
I have an MA in English from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. I received my undergraduate degree in English from Brigham Young University. I have helped students and colleagues with grammar, spelling, writing and expression for most of my life. In fact, when I was in junior high, the school didn't know what to do with me. I tested so high in English, there was no class to put me in. Embarrassingly enough, they had me tutor my peers. I was so shy and they were the same age as I was. Most of them were much larger as well. (I'm vertically challenged.) It's one of those times in your life that you'd rather forget yet always remember.
Anyway, I hope this gives you enough information to choose me to tutor. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider me.
With respect,
Elizabeth N.
