Personal Statement

I studied Applied Linguistics (ESL), Technical Communications, and Education at Texas Tech University, where I taught undergraduate and graduate international students while obtaining Master of Arts degrees in 2003 and 2005. I have undergraduate degrees in journalism and political science. I also have a minor in civil engineering, which allowed me to work more than 10 years in the civil engineering field. I currently rate tests of English as a Second Language that are administered around the world. Too, I teach Critical Thinking online for a well-known university. I have taught Technical Writing and English as a Second Language at the university level. From time to time, I provide consulting services regarding English to translators in South American. Here are some examples of my experience so far: • Tutored a Romanian graduate student who wanted to learn words and phrases to feel more comfortable in social settings •Tutored a Peruvian-born minister to improve his English skills so as to enhance the effectiveness of his outreach programs •Tutored a young Hungarian chess grandmaster online who was preparing to take entrance exams to study in the United States • Tutored two university students struggling with Spanish, resulting in the successful completion of their coursework, which allowed one student to obtain a job that was waiting for him • Tutored Spanish to a professor preparing to go to Spain for an academic exchange program• •Taught seminars to International Teaching Assistants on using English effectively • Edited professional research papers written by university faculty and Ph.D. students who aimed to publish them in academic journals or present them at professional conferences • Proofread and edited applications for graduate school, scholarships and grants • Evaluated and graded Tests of Spoken English and TOEFL-like essays as part of university placement programs • Edited reports, Letters of Interest, and Requests for Proposals for a Chinese-born civil engineer who own his own company
