Personal Statement

Hi, I am an Edinboro University Graduate with a degree in Elementary Education as well as Early Childhood Education. During field experience and student teaching, I have had the chance to work with students ranging from Kindergarten to fifth grade. I am currently working as a substitute teacher in the elementary schools. Therefore, I will gladly assist students with subjects that are being taught in an elementary classroom. I will also be able to assist English Language Learners who are having difficulty in their speaking skills as well as the English language. When working as a tutor at Edinboro University, I realized that it is important not only to teach what the students need to know, but it is also important to understand exactly what the students do not understand and find out ways to help students learn more effectively. Teaching using a variety of methods such as showing what the students are learning by providing examples on paper or with actual objects can be extremely helpful. Also, a step by step process is helpful by making sure the students learn the process and not only obtain the correct answer. Furthermore, it is important for tutors to assist students in connecting the current subject with what the students already know. I understand that it is a critical responsibility for tutors to make sure that they use their best knowledge and demonstrate the best effort to make sure that students become successful in school. Not only do tutors have to demonstrate qualifying knowledge and put in the best effort to ensure that students succeed, but also they have to be compassionate, understanding, patient, and willing to utilize different ways to help the students understand the materials. Being able to tutor students gives me the chance to help others succeed, help others build their confidence and self-esteem, and help others feel comfortable to be in school. I strongly believe that it is crucial that students feel comfortable with what they are learning and feel confident moving forward in school and in life. It will also give me the chance to improve my teaching skills in order to serve more effectively in the educational career.
