Personal Statement

I received the ESL method training at the Elms College in Chicopee, MA. I am a Suffolk University graduate in Communication and Journalism (4.0 GPA). My excellent writing and oral skills were gained while pursuing my Bachelor’s in Science degree and through my employment as a writer/proof-reader at a local business magazine, and later a coordinator/office manager of a non-profit organization, which set a strong foundation for my English language skills. My additional experience working as an English to Polish/Polish to English interpreter during International Trade Fairs in Poland also became a great contributing factor to my English language expertise. Beginning my journey years ago as a young girl from Poland through the United States education system with the ESL program in Hyannis Center put me in a special place of understanding the challenges and dynamics of an international community. Having taken and passed the TOEFL exam before entering college gave me a deeper understanding of the exam procedures and skills necessary to pass the test. Helping adult learners at the local non-profit improve their computer skills gave me valuable experience in adapting to the individual needs of adult learners. Volunteering my time at a local elementary school in 2009 (reading to the class) and in 2011 (helping with homework corrections and classroom activities) has expanded my experience and understanding of the elementary classroom dynamics and students’ varied needs, skills and levels of English language comprehension. On a personal note, I have been raising my two children in a bilingual environment (with the older one fluent in speaking, reading and writing in both English and Polish) knowing the great impact the second language acquisition has on a young person’s future educational and work success, as well as his or her positively enriched world view. My recently acquired knowledge of the International Phonetics Alphabet through Bridgewater State University would help international students to better understand the English letter-sound relations as well as overcome pronunciation barriers non-native speakers face while acquiring the second language. Being able to relate my positive ESL experience would undoubtedly help improve their confidence level and success rate with language acquisition as well as with the desired content related material that needs revision/tutoring. I believe that all of these skills, combined with my genuine passion for teaching English as a second language, would contribute to your great success in improving your language skills.
