Personal Statement

I have come to my profession as a reading specialist after graduating with a BME in music and teaching special education, in which I obtained a Master's Degree. I am endorsed in reading in both Massachusetts and Connecticut. At present, I am working as a reading specialist for a private school having children and adolescents with special needs. I have taught in many settings including public school and adult education. My present role in helping kids either learn to read or read and write better than they have has been the very best thing I have done in my career. I have been able to see the light go on and the new sense of pride that a student justifiably has when they read for the very first time or when they've been able to reach a level of fluency that was never possible before. My overall sense in my teaching is that I am pulling and shaping ability that has always been present, but never realized. My students "own" their success and I come along to guide the way. I feel that the student deserves my best. Tutoring will include in the beginning a complete reading evaluation which will be thoroughly explained to those who are interested in this information. I would happily work in collaboration with other school personnel for the benefit of the student. My credentials as an experienced special educator allows me an understanding of special kids and their school world.
