Personal Statement

Hello – let me introduce myself and tell you a little bit about me. My name is Dane, I am 23 years old and currently enrolled at Old Dominion University. I am a senior, majoring in Chemistry and will be graduating with a BS degree in May 2012. In addition to Chemistry, I have a broad background in other Physical Sciences as well as Math Sciences, Physics, Calculus and Algebra. Not only have I mastered these areas, but I have successfully completed 12 credit hours enrolled in Secondary Education teaching classes. I have provided successful tutoring services for family friends in Chemistry and Physics as well as various levels of Algebra. No matter what the challenges are, I am very good at connecting with the student and finding out how to present the topic in an interesting and fun manner so that the student can succeed. I was very fortunate to have had an outstanding Chemistry instructor in high school who left a lasting impression on me, specifically that Chemistry, Physical and Math Sciences are fascinating and fun courses of study. While I can’t guarantee a student will win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry or Physics, I can and will help the student find the spark to succeed in his or her studies. My approach to tutoring and teaching is not set in stone. I understand that different students learn material differently. I take the time to determine the best way to approach the challenges the student has. I use a “building block” approach as much as possible to present basic concepts that the student can master and build on to create a solid foundation that will successfully support understanding more difficult concepts. I use real world examples and analogies as much as possible to present the material and I strive to develop an interactive and proactive approach that will not only enable the student to learn the material, but also have fun with the learning process. I have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and have a keen understanding of the unique and particular challenges to studying and learning this can present. I have been there, so I understand exactly the frustrations a student with ADD/ADHD may be going through. If the student has ADD/ADHD, I am confident that I can develop a tutoring plan the student to successfully learn and understand the material. In my free time, I enjoy playing guitar, performing and watching live music. I participated in club soccer for 12 years in Virginia Beach and Omaha, Nebraska. I enjoy computer gaming and building my own computer equipment. I have been actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America for over 15 years and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2005. I am an avid camper and hiker and enjoy the outdoors. I have studied martial arts for 6 years and earned a black belt in Muay Thai kick boxing, with additional study in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the Filipino Martial Arts of Eskrima Kali and Pekiti Tersia. For two years, I was an undergraduate assistant for one of my professors and became highly involved in her research projects. The focus of the research was calculating and determining activation energies for various stages of chemical reactions and determining the manner in which these reactions proceeded.
