Personal Statement

Dear Prospective Client, Thank you for reading my profile. I've always been concerned about education, because I consider it to be the great “equalizer” in our society. A quality education can lift generations from poverty. A quality education can provide an unequaled sense of personal fulfillment. During the next few minutes I’d like to acquaint you with the qualifications and experiences which make me a valuable educational resource for college students, corporations and families in the Memphis and Shelby County areas. Highly Qualified I am considered Highly Qualified under the No Child Left Behind Act, in both Spanish and ESOL/ESL, as evidenced by my scores on the national teacher subject matter assessments or praxis exams. Additionally, based on my college degree--a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business from the prestigious Hendrix College (see U.S. News and World Reports)--I also am considered HQ under NCLB because of a minimum of 24 hours in Economics and Business, as required by state standards. Finally, part of my family is native Spanish-speaking and I have been exposed to Spanish since the age of five. My granddaughter, who lived for awhile with me in my California home, spoke Spanish first and English secondly and thus, I gained valuable ESOL/ESL experience while working with her. Experiential Background From 1989 – 1999, I served a 10-year gubernatorial appointment to the Arkansas State Board of Higher Education. This board is responsible for policy and governance of Arkansas’ public universities and colleges. During my tenure, I became very concerned about the decline in U.S. standardized test scores and lower than expected graduation rates. During this time period, I began to nurture dreams of leaving corporate life and becoming an educator. I worked with colleagues in the Arkansas Foreign Language Teachers Associations, LULAC, the Governor's Hispanic Task Force, and members of the State Board of Education (which governs K-12 education) on issues related to foreign language education and its relationship to diversity, in terms of the growing Hispanic or Latino presence in Arkansas. Making Passion a Profession My parents tell me that my first love was teaching and I believe it, because I am so happy with my life now! My mother, who taught mathematics for 40 years, says that I began my teaching career at the age of five, as I lined up my dolls for daily lessons. This early passion for teaching and my academic and business world successes--along with my knowledge of international cultures and travels throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, Western Europe and Scandinavia--have provided me with the ability to help YOU enhance your skills in more than 19 subject areas. A few years ago, after almost 30 years with four multi-national companies, I decided to leave business leadership and return to my first love--teaching. I retired from corporate life and, after a three-month break, I was selected as a member of the rigorous Memphis Teaching Fellows Institute, having passed all required basic Teacher Education Program entrance exams, as well as the praxis qualifying exam to teach Spanish. I had no idea how it would change my life! Since completing the institute and teaching in Title I urban schools, I have learned that my greatest desire in teaching is to help others improve either their English language or Spanish language communication skills. Thus, my tutoring practice is dedicated to helping native English-speaking clients or English language learners (ELLs)--of any age--improve their grammar, vocabulary, phonic, reading and study skills in either English or Spanish. (Please see my WyzAnt profile and review the write-ups of my subject certifications.) I also work as a mentor for those wanting to shore up basic communication and life skills, including etiquette and general education. The Business of Education Last year, in addition to my regular teaching duties, I began tutoring Spanish, weekly, for students in the Shelby County Schools district, and I found it to be very enjoyable and rewarding. I also make myself available for organizations that provide Supplemental Educational Services or SES, as well as school district-initiated Homebound Services. Since beginning my independent tutoring business and contracting services, I have learned that so many families and their children need caring, dedicated individuals to offer home-based services for subjects other than Spanish and English, thus, I have joined the WyzAnt Tutoring team to expand my ability to help others. While I have tutored primarily Spanish 1 – Spanish IV and ESOL/ESL privately, I now am offering my tutoring services in Spanish, ESL-ESOL, English and Language Arts, Business and Economics, Grammar, Phonics, Spelling, Vocabulary and Study Skills, along with mentoring and public speaking coaching, through the foremost tutoring company--WyzAnt! Here to Help YOU Thank you for considering me as your tutor for Spanish, ESL-ESOL, English, Language Arts, Business and Economics or any of the other subjects listed above. If you need to provide corporate managers with Spanish language skills or enhanced English writing skills, let me help you! If you—as a parent—would like to learn along with your child or children, why not make tutor-enhanced learning a family affair? Whatever your needs, group rates are available and can be customized according to your organization or family dynamics. Thank you again, Patricia G
