Personal Statement

I was an Adjunct instructor for Urbana University (579 College Way Urbana, OH US 43-1312) from 6/1989 until 6/1997. I taught 1 or 2 college level social science courses per semester (3 credits per course) for Urbana University. I taught on the main campus, the Dayton site and at the London site at London Medium Security Penitentiary for Men at London, Ohio. I taught the following courses: Ohio History, US History I & II, World History I & II, Cultural Anthropology, Regional and Cultural Geography, African American History, American Government, Introduction to Political Science and Introduction to State and Local Government. I managed classes as small as 1 and as large as 150 and I used multi media as well as old fashion lectures to share the highlights of each of these subjects. I prepared lectures and lessons, wrote and graded tests and tutored any students who asked for help. I developed schemes to permit students to do independent research projects allowing them to explore their interests within the perimeters of the course. In a State and Local History course that I taught, I encouraged my students to participate in local government and one student actually ran for local office. I was also hired to teach at Wilmington College of Ohio Spring Semester 1993.the chair of the History Department contacted me in December 1992 and asked me to teach 2 courses at Wilmington College. The professor who normally taught the classes had taken ill and my name had been given to him by someone at Urbana University. I taught US History II and Introduction to Latin American History at the main campus, Spring semester 1993. I prepared lessons, lectures, and multimedia presentations. I constructed, monitored and graded tests and assigned and graded individual and group projects within the scope of each of the classes. I tutored any student who asked me for help. I also taught high school social studies classes at West Wendover HS. 7th grade Studies Skills, 10th grade US History, 12th grade Economics, Western Civilization & World Geography. Created lesson plans, worksheets, and tests, graded student work, created an atmosphere of learning in the classroom, meted out discipline, assisted with security, counseled students, and tried to share my passion for history by using primary sources in my presentations. I used WORD, PowerPoint, CorelDraw and the extensive resources of the Internet to create such presentations. I used Taskstream and Curriculum Mapper software to create lesson plans and to share what I had taught with other teachers in the school on-line and to discover what the students were supposed to have been taught in their prerequisite social studies classes. I was a member of the Social Studies Curriculum Committee which evaluated texts and other materials for adoption by the Elko County School District. I taught World Cultural Geography at the high school and college level and I would enjoy the opportunity to tutor in that area. I consider myself an expert in PowerPoint and could probably tutor in this area as well. I taught myself but my presentations have always looked professional and glitzed with audio and musical backgrounds. I have received praise from my student and peer audiences for them. I can also teach introductory Economics but I am not as comfortable with the subject. I am at my best teaching United States History (particularly pre-Civil War and Reconstruction, World survey history,European History, and US Government classes. I have a total of 193 undergraduate and graduate semester hours of education-- 83 of those credits are in history--either US or World (European-including Russian) history. I have had 6 semesters hours in French Revolution and Napoleon and I have read a substantial amount in WWI era history and in US Civil War History. I have also read a little bit of British Naval history related to the pre- and post WWI era. I am rusty on recent Latin American History but I have a very good grasp of it from it from the Pre-Columbian era through the 1960's. Since I assigned quite a few writing projects in my time, I feel that I could be of great service in assisting students in the writing of essays, book reviews and term papers. I could assist students if they are assigned to do research that must make use of primary sources or if they are assigned to complete an oral history project. I know my way around an Archives and around manuscript collections. I wrote all my academic papers using the Chicago Manual of Style or its short version known as (Kate) Turabian's A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. I will not write papers for students but I am available to make corrections of grammar, style and citation. I was trained as an archivist at Wright State University as a part of my minor in Archives and Museum Management. I inventoried and wrote the finding aid for the Eleanor Lewis Collection housed at the Archives of Antioch College, Yellow Springs, OH. Completed March 1986. In 1987 I researched and wrote a 32 page history of Grace Gospel Christian and Missionary Alliance Church when it was still located at Wolf Road in Dayton, OH. Research included conducting interviews and collecting oral histories from the elderly members of the congregation. The history was reproduced and distributed to the membership on an anniversary of its founding, October 1987. I would be a useful tutor to the graduate history student as well as the undergraduate history student and to students taking survey history and Us government course.
