Personal Statement
After a rich career as a diplomat, senior official, rabbi and university faculty, I am delighted to be the master of my life and do what I love most - teach.
Ever since I can remember, my greatest passions were languages and history. I graduated from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel in area studies, including the history of East and Southeast Asia and Russia and Eastern Europe. For graduate school I traveled to Europe and acquired, in addition to English and Hebrew, fluency in French and the command of German and Dutch languages. I joined the Israeli foreign service and was stationed in Europe and Africa. Later I earned an MBA and moved to the USA to complete my rabbinic studies. In the past ten years I taught Hebrew, Jewish Studies and History of the Middle East at the middle school, high school and university levels.
My teaching philosophy is based on the idea of meeting the learners where they are and coaching and challenging them to move higher according to their ability. I believe that while learning does require hard work it can and should be made fun, and I employ a variety of teaching methods to suit the needs of each student.
My courses include Modern Hebrew - both written and spoken - and Biblical Hebrew, which is primarily textual. Learning Hebrew with me means learning from a native speaker who is also a rabbi and has a deep understanding of the language and culture. Having spent many years in France, I have a near-native command of the language, and with my language teaching experience you can expect the best. The same applies to history, as what is better than learning history from a historian? And finally, if you seek instruction for Bar/Bat Mitzva, you can learn both the Hebrew and the chanting combined.
