Personal Statement

My name is Ben. I graduated from high school in 2009 and I am currently a student at UC Davis. I am a Junior double majoring in Mechanical and Materials Science Engineering. I have extensive experience with calculus and trigonometry. While in high school, I took online AP Calculus AB (after taking Trig/Pre-Calculus) and was the first student at my high school to pass the class and to receive an "A" in the course. In college, I have taken all six courses in the Engineering math series (21A-D, 22A-B), along with numerous courses that apply calculus and trigonometry concepts, such as physics and computer programming. I recognize that people have different learning styles, and that they also have different aptitudes, interests, and levels of fear regarding math. I believe that hearing and applying concepts in as many ways possible is one of the best ways to gain a true understanding and familiarity with mathematical concepts. The words "Trigonometry" and "Calculus" do not have to be scary words. Just like in arithmetic and algebra, there are some complexities and difficulties. However, I believe that with some understanding of the basic concepts, trigonometry and calculus can be made much more accessible. I first became interested in mathematics when I finally understood the reasoning behind mathematics and then learned how to apply math to solve real problems. My goal in tutoring is to help students reach this understanding so that math can become a powerful tool rather than an obstacle.
