Personal Statement
My name is Samir. I am married with three kids. I am originally from Egypt.
I have a bachelor degree. I graduated from the Faculty of Education in 1995 with a Bachelor of Education and Arts, Department of English with a grade good. Then, I worked as an ESL Teacher at Alexandria, Egypt. I worked at Middle School for two years. During that period, I taught students English as a Second Language. I was responsible for all the English activities at school as the English School Broadcast. I was very patient with the students, especially who need extra help.I always believe that learning a second language is vital for everybody's life. I taught English through songs and acting. My approach in teaching the second language using the Communicative approach which based on real life situations not just teach using the old Grammar Translation method. After that I was promoted to teach at a high school. I spent about 13 years with the high School students. In 2000 I worked at "Mohamed Zahran Experimental Language High School" I taught students both the Ordinary Level and the Advanced Level. I taught them Novel, Drama, Poetry, Grammar and Reading.
In 2009 I applied to participate in a program which was sponsored by the American Councils. This program is called "TCLP" which means "Teachers of Critical Languages". This required me to travel to USA and teach Arabic to the High School Students who are American but interested to learn Arabic. More than 2000 Egyptian teachers applied but only ten of them were chosen after a lot of exams and interviews. I was one of those who traveled to America to teach Arabic and Middle Eastern Culture. I traveled to Washington DC on the first of August 2009 and stayed there for two weeks orientation to learn how to deal with the American students. Then I traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah to teach at "The Academy of Math, Engineering and Science". There was an Open House Activity before the beginning of the School Year in which I met the students and their parents who were interested in taking Arabic. I showed them some of the teaching materials I brought with me from Egypt and had a useful discussion about the importance of learning Arabic. The resulting 70 students enrolled to take Arabic. I spent a good year with my students and I established an Arabic Club. At this Club, students were able to learn Arabic indirectly through games, preparing Egyptian food, and a lot of other activities.
Throughout that year I traveled to Boston to attend a conference with the TCLP Staff. I also traveled to New Mexico to attend the scwolt Conference and I was lucky to win a new iPad. I was also able to give a lot of lectures at other Elementary, Middle and High Schools about Egypt and the Middle Eastern Culture. After I traveled back to Egypt, my family and I immigrated to live in the USA as permanent residents.
