Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Patty. I have a passion for helping individuals improve their learning aptitude and feel more confident in accomplishing their academic or personal goals in literacy.
My educational background is Elementary Education and Reading. I have an Arizona Provisional Teaching Certificate. I raised three children and was very active in their education.
My work experience is being a substitute teacher, tutor and learning support specialist. I have over 10 years experience working with students with learning disabilities in elementary school and in the college setting. Time management and organization are crucial skills to develop in the students with ADHD and Learning Disabilities. I help students get organize and set goals.
My specialty is tutoring students in reading and learning strategies. Typically, I like to encourage my students to take an informal learning survey and learning styles assessment so we can determine the most preferred methods of learning and studying and seek to understand what skills should be targeted in the area of learning. Many times students who thought they had a learning disability, really just needed some additional assistance with skill building in note-taking, listening, time management, reading or studying.
I am a K-6th tutor working for a private tutoring company contracted with school districts to provide supplemental educational services (SES). These services offer students extra help in academic subjects such as reading, language arts, and mathematics. Once I know the target areas of learning, I specifically craft the tutoring sessions to meet the student's needs.
My goal is getting to know my student's interests, strengths and areas for improvement. Then we begin to set goals short and long term goals for our tutoring sessions. The first few sessions are dedicated to assessment and gathering information from the student, parent and teachers. It will be the responsibility of the student or parent to communicate with the teacher as to what the tutoring/learning needs are. I will provide a teacher and parent check list to be completed within the first two weeks of tutoring.
I have a Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card, State of Arizona, Issue date 4/1/2011.
I look forward in working with you and/or child. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
