Personal Statement

My name is Maciej S. and I am currently a senior at St. Joseph’s College. There I am studying biology with a minor in chemistry. I am applying to medical schools in hopes of becoming a doctor one day. Throughout the four years I’ve tried my best to learn and excel in all my subjects. My current GPA is a successful 3.9, of which I am very proud. I also work at my college as a Teacher Assistant (TA) at biology-major labs that include physiology, genetics, general biology, etc. Many times, I’ve been asked to tutor younger peers in organic chemistry by my professor, being one of the best students in her class. There were also other tutoring jobs I held in my neighborhood and school privately, at which I was very successful and my students were satisfied with their improvements. I finished Polish Saturday School after coming to the U.S. from Poland in 2001; therefore, I am also qualified to teach the Polish language, geography, and history. I passed certifications at Columbia University confirming my knowledge of the language. In my eyes, tutoring is not only a job, but a journey that I take with a student to overcome the obstacles in the field that they struggle in. When I teach, I expect my student to put in the same amount of effort by learning and comprehending the material. I always give my all to help a person as long as they take my efforts seriously. Personally, being still a college student, I know that boring lectures or explanations are not the best ways to learn. Therefore, I try to incorporate stories or creative examples into my tutoring sessions that will get the student interested in the subject. A student needs to fall in love with the subject to start enjoying it and learning it even though he or she struggles in it. So, I am excited to teach all who want to learn and excel in their studies, because knowledge is golden in our time and age.
