Personal Statement
I recently graduated this past spring from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) with a BA in Classical Civilization. As a part of my coursework, I have taken the equivalent of seven semesters of Latin, and I have taken six semesters of Classical Greek. Additionally, I gained a broad array of Latin teaching skills by taking a Latin teaching practicum class. Through this course, I acquired techniques for teaching Latin morphology and syntax, focusing on how to give students the tools they need so that they can READ Latin with ease. I also filled in as a substitute teacher for a University of Michigan introductory Latin class. During the 2 school year, I worked as an Introductory Greek tutor 4-5 hours per week, helping a student-athlete master the morphology and syntax needed so that she could begin taking Koine Greek classes.
Regarding textbooks: as a Greek tutor, I worked out of Hansen and Quinn's "Greek: an Intensive Course." For Latin, I am familiar with many texts typically used in high schools, including: Latin for American's, Jenney's, Ecce Romani, Cambridge, and Oxford.
I am deeply passionate about the Classics, and strongly believe that learning Latin and Greek is a great way for students to gain an understanding of Greek and Roman culture. As a tutor, I hope to share my love of Latin and Greek with others!
