Personal Statement
I graduated with a degree in Classics from Xavier University, through an Honors Program for classical languages. Established in 1948, the Honors AB program preserves the last remaining vestiges of the Ratio Studiorum. The Ratio was a document published in 1599 by the Jesuits to set a uniform curriculum in all Jesuit universities. It stipulated that before a student could graduate from a Jesuit university, they had to have studied Cicero, Virgil, and be able to write in Latin, among other intellectual achievements.
In addition to majoring in Classics, I also acquired minors in Greek, Latin, and Classical Humanities. I have read Cicero, Virgil, Ovid, Catullus, Tibullus, Propertius, Horace, Pliny the Younger, and Tacitus in Latin, as well as taking an extensive course on Latin Composition. In Greek I have studied Longus, Sophocles, Euripedes, Demosthenes, Homer, Herodotus, Thucydides and Lysias, among others. I tutored high school Latin students while I was in college, and I understand the frustration a student can feel when they don't understand Latin grammar. In order to translate well and make sense of Greek or Latin, an understanding of the grammar is essential. Adequate explanation preceeds memorization. I love Greek and Latin and am eager to tutor those who wish to learn them as well. I was homeschooled as a child and would also be eager to teach or tutor homeschooled kids in the ancient languages.
