Personal Statement
I am a small business owner who's company provides recreational program to over 30 nursing homes and assisted living. In 1999 one year after graduating College with a BA in sociology, I moved to Isreal to become a body balance therapist in the Elbaum Center. The goal of the Elbaum Center is to help children who have coordination diffuculties, and learning disabilities. To date there is not a school in the states that focus on these problems primarily through physical and coordination exercises. The school was taught exclusively in Hebrew.
I will start from the beginning I attended Yeshiva for 12 years from First grade through High School. The Yeshiva system in the United States is very flawed and with the exception of very few religious institutions most Yeshiva students Hebrew speaking and comprehension is very poor. I was no exception I took Hebrew in a Jewish Community Center, during College and while my Hebrew had improved it was not at the level that I needed it to be. I was taking sophisticated biology and psychology courses.
I immersed myself in five day a week Hebrew classes within a year my Hebrew improved to the point that I understood almost everything talked about in class. My Hebrew became fluent during my second year where I could understand televisions programs in Hebrew. However to get to that point was an arduous task to say the least. I had a wonderful tutor named Shelley who made me keep a notebook for all the words that I did not know. Soon I had thousands of complex and easy day to day words written throughout the notebook. I tried to only speak Hebrew with Israelites.
