Personal Statement
From 1987 to 1997, I taught as a part-time, adjunct instructor at Lake-Sumter Community College in Leesburg, Florida. After marrying in 1997 and moving to Georgia, I accrued five years of adjunct teaching experience at Chattahoochee Technical College in Marietta, Georgia. As an instructor, I developed, prepared, and maintained all of my own lecture materials for the Introduction to Sociology and Introduction to Psychology classes (CTC) and for the Introduction to Psychology, Psychology of Human Lifespan Development, and Psychology of Child Development classes (LSCC). I employed unique examples, demonstrations, and teaching strategies to ensure clarity of concepts and to enhance the overall learning experience for all students. I also counseled students during each learning term with respect to study methods, academic performance, work ethics, and future goals. Further, while working as an instructor at Lake-Sumter, I conducted seminars in both Stress and Time Management for small businesses in the area. Through continuing education opportunities, I have kept my skills and knowledge current in order to return to academia.
In addition to my time with students and in the classroom, I have worked in the corporate/business world. My experience includes my current position with a law firm, knowledge of operations in real estate, construction, financing, and human resources, and eighteen years of experience at The Walt Disney Company. In these roles, I have participated in all of the activities associated with the administrative support of top executives within an organization, and have interacted with many levels of management and staff, as well as a diverse group of clientele. My experience in business has allowed me to develop exceptional written communication skills including writing, vocabulary, proof-reading, editing, and grammar.
I am an avid reader and strongly desire that all persons should come to know the joy of reading. I participated in an adult literacy program while still living and working in Florida. Utilizing the Laubauch method, I tutored adults in both reading and writing and helped them achieve personal goals of success.
Whether training for a new role in business, learning in a classroom setting, or working one-on-one with a student, I believe that learning should be exciting and engaging. Application must accompany concept if meaningful learning and understanding is to take place. Real-world examples bring learning to life, and I encourage students to recognize classroom concepts in their daily living.
