Personal Statement

I am a 3rd year graduate students at Eastern Michigan University completing my Masters in English Linguistics. This program has not only allowed me the ability to do a complete breakdown of English, but also it has given me the ability to make typological comparisons between English and other languages. That is, I am able to make cross-linguistics comparisons of grammar/syntax and morphology of words and sentences to better explain the function and positioning of English words and grammar, so long as a speaker understands the grammar of their own language. In terms of spoken English, I am able to tutor Standard American English as well as dialectal variants. In written English, I can help to differentiate both prescriptive and descriptive rules of grammar, so one will have the ability to write a professional letter or communicate more informally among peers. I will be able to help tease out Semantic features of words and expand vocabulary in finding other words whose Semantic features are more appropriate for the relay of specific concepts. I am also trained in the International Phonetic Alphabet, which is a useful tool in learning pronunciations for non-native speakers. I have had much experience in writing reports in both APA and MLA formats, as well as proofreading/editing experience in the same respects. These skills are not hard to master but they do require some diligence in following format i.e. properly citing your sources, headers/footers/page number placement. My services can be a useful tool if you are looking for a more in depth experience of English as it is really spoken and written. I can provide the instruction of an English Major plus a linguistic breakdown that reflects the language in its natural state, so that one may be able to navigate the different registers of both the "Standard" and commonplace usage, depending on social needs and context.
