Personal Statement

I have had over 35 years total experience in IT, much of it consulting, over a very wide range of industries and applications. I joined the ANSI X3H2 Database Standards Committee in 1987 and helped write the ANSI/ISO SQL-89 and SQL-92 standards. I am considered one of the top SQL gurus in the world. I have written a series of books (seven so far, #8 in the works) on SQL and databases for Morgan-Kaufmann, including the best-selling SQL FOR smarties, which have been translated into Russian, Chinese, French and Hungarian. I have had over a dozen regular monthly or biweekly columns in the computer trade and academic press in the US and Europe. I have done over 1200 articles and presentations. Communication skills are not a problem. My public sector consulting work has been for prison systems, medical organizations, NASA and defense contractors. I helped set up Programming and Software Engineering standards for the US Army at airmics and wrote regular columns on it in the trade press. My commercial work has been varied -- auto loans, entertainment, aerospace, education, shipping (freight lines and ocean shipping), petro-chemical, and software companies. I like to do strange new things that call for a creative solution. I have taught training classes or consulted in South Africa, Turkey, the UK, Norway, Sweden, Finland, The Netherlands, Brazil, Belgium, and Switzerland. I have also taught on-line classes for MySQL. My last full-time job was with the founding of Neumont University in Salt Lake City; a for-profit start-up for software developers. On the weird side, I teach Texas 42 on Royal Carribbean Cruises. I have a Master's in Math (Georgia State University) and a Masters in Computer Science (Georgia Tech) and an undergraduate degree was in math, with heavy statistics and analysis.
