Personal Statement
My name is Pat and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I am seeking a degree in Classical Languages, with focus on Latin literature and grammar. I am also a History major, focusing primarily on European History, but with some attention to World History as well. I am a Political Science minor, and thus am also qualified to tutor in the government and politics of the United States.
I have tutored Latin for five years now, to students ranging from Latin 1 up to A.P. Latin: Vergil. I have tutored in everything from the very basics of Latin grammar to the complexities of authentic Latin literature. I am also qualified in Ancient Roman History, and Classical Mythology. I too have taken seven years of Latin, and have covered many of the prominent authors of the language and their major works. My specialty in Latin is Lyric Poetry, especially in regards to Catullus, Horace, Ovid, and Vergil. I am also experienced with Prose authors Cicero, Pliny, and Petronius.
In regards to history, I have taken A.P. European History, as well as several years of both U.S. History and World History. European History is my specialty in the history department.
My approach to tutoring is approachable, but is in no way "easy." I create challenging, yet approachable assignments that often help tutees learn the material and keep it with them. I give regular assignments, and quiz my tutee's knowledge of them after reviewing the material with them, so that we can assess the individual's strengths and weaknesses. As an aspiring Latin and History teacher, I take tutoring very seriously and have seen students do well under my extra help.
