Personal Statement
I have mastered Arabic, my native tongue, both colloquially and formally. My Bachelor of Arts degree in the Arabic language is from the Arabic Department, Cairo University, Egypt. Four years were dedicated to studying Arabic in depth. Any graduate of the Arabic Department is entitled to teach Arabic at all levels in any Arab country including Egypt. My PhD degree written in Modern Standard Arabic was about the Arabic Egyptian press It covered half a century and dealt with forty Arabic newspapers.
My work with the Egyptian Parliament was to re-write the members' colloquial discussions into Modern Standard Arabic. That requires exacting use of grammar and literary canons. For the Information State Agency of Egypt, I wrote pamphlets couched in Modern Standard Arabic. For three years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), at the United States, I worked as an Arabic Tester. I examined new employees who were applying to work as translators for the FBI. My job was to examine their strength in Arabic.
I wrote more than 200 columns in the influential newspaper Al-Ahram, Egypt. For Mohager Publishing House, at the United States, I designed 520 multiple-choice questions that covered all aspects of the Arabic Language and literature. These questions are suitable for elementary students, intermediate and advanced. I also wrote several articles for the FBI magazines.
I taught Arabic to both heritage and non-heritage students. For 4 years in Egypt, I taught Arabic at Herz School, Egypt. In the States, I taught Arabic at Language Door in Santa Monica. Last year, I was a tutor of 25 students. Most of them were from UCLA. They were from different levels in Arabic.
