Personal Statement
teaching methods & philosophy
purpose: The students have to make the Philosophical ideas part of their existence. They€ll have to develop a critical thinking and be able to sharpen their memory and justifying ability. Freedom of thought and speech is also crucial.
A) lecturing : This is based on: a) Teaching, b) Explaining, c) Demonstrating
Etymology and systematic analysis are big parts of my teaching style. Use of the Greek terminology is necessary in my opinion.
Materials: Board, books, notes, over-head, videos (if necessary).
B) interacting: The students will apply and experience the Socratic Method of €seeking the truth€ and the limits of knowledge, by questioning. In Philosophy what matters the most is to €set the frame of search€, which means: TO ASK. There is a way HOW we question though.
B1) TEAM-WORK
This is based on a) Collaborating, b) Discussing, c) Exchanging research experiences (after projects are done)
B2) individual research
This is based on the students€ work. They can use all kinds of available sources, like Internet, books, lectures, also they can attend Seminars, Workshops, Conferences.
TOOLS of Teaching-Philosophy:
A) Synthesis and Analysis
In my 27 years of teaching experience, I have been combining Philosophy, Ancient Greek Language and History in my classes as a teaching procedure. This helped my students to make the necessary connections to the antiquity and to increase their memory, imagination and creativity.
I combine Philosophical ideas and Historical analysis, in order to explain the vocabulary and dialects used in the ancient texts.
(For instance, while teaching the pre-Socratic ideas, I present the Archaeological works and elements of that period, talk about the €Medieval times of Antiquity€ and analyze the connection between the Geometrical Art and the pre-Socratic Philosophy).
B) Transitions and Relations
Besides this, I encourage my students to connect the ancient Greek Philosophical considerations with Myths and also with the Historical or Archaeological elements (statues, temples, theaters etc.) and their mythical versions of different cultures (i.e. the Myth of Prometheus in the Greek tragedy in comparison to the Chinese myth of 'god of fire and goddess of smoke').
C) Dramatization
A big part of my teaching methodology is dramatization, which inspires my students to act out dialogues of ancient or modern theatrical works.
A Philosophy class might become a 'boring lecture', if there's no classroom activities. In my opinion, it's crucial for the University students to unfold their imagination and understanding, so they need to have classroom activities. This will help them to comprehend Philosophical concepts like €purpose€, 'place', 'balance', 'symmetry', 'motion' and link them to the daily life activities, ritual procedures or ethical components of historical & mythical creation.
.
D) Multiple Choice questionnaires and often Quizzes (see Syllabus I€ve composed)
My teaching Philosophy is based upon principles of respect and equality of all students, particularly on their equal opportunities in learning.
The principles which Wilhelm Maximilian Wundt created in his €Psychology-Laboratory€ about methods of encouraging the (known as) €weak€ (actually just different) students to improve themselves in the classroom and to fulfill their potential also define my teaching perspective. Those theories and practices are based on the value and principles of €Equal rights in Education€, founded by Aristotle in the Western (Greek) antiquity (according to his ethical theory about €equal opportunities in life€). Specifically those methods include the constant encouragement, methodical and systematic approach of all subjects, giving space to creativity.
The Workshops I have attended in Greece, based on Wundt€s theories, in comparison with Maria Montessori€s teaching methods (which are based on using materials not only lecturing and instructions-giving), have helped me a lot to improve myself an educator and my students as future citizens and wise adults.
The €tools€ and Philosophical methods I use are mostly based on both approaches: The €Idealistic model€ of Philosophical teaching the History of Philosophy and the €Analytical model€ of critical thinking, combined of course with Linguistics and Etymology, analysis of the structure/€Syntaxis€ of Philosophical speech.
