Personal Statement

Hello! My name is Rachel and I am a former Writing Center tutor from DePaul University in Chicago, where I received my B.A. in International Studies and minored in Spanish and Philosophy. I loved my time at the Writing Center and working with writers of all ages, ethnicities, majors, and professions. I began tutoring at the University in January 2008, during my sophomore year, after being nominated by my writing instructor the previous year for my peer editing skills. My senior year I became the first undergraduate Office Manager at the Center for my dedication to tutoring, and was awarded the title of DePaul University's 2 Student Employee of the Year for my performance as a tutor and Office Manager. I have worked with many different writers throughout my 4 years of tutoring. From non-native speakers, to returning or adult students, to graduate students, and just your typical freshman in introductory courses, I have learned to adapt to each writer's style of learning and try to offer feedback that not only improves that one piece of writing, but helps them improve as a writer overall. I had to take a quarter-long training course when I started tutoring, where I was acquainted with many different academic techniques for working with writers, and I really absorbed those concepts into my tutoring practice. I can help with any stage of the writing process and with any subject matter, including resumes and cover letters. I believe regardless of the content, an outside reader of one's paper should be able to understand and take away a some point from what they read. I am objective listener and willing to help you generate your ideas, brainstorm, offer writing advice, proofread, and just be someone you can vent to about the pain that can sometimes be the writing process. Additionally, I minored in Spanish and have been a fluent speaker/reader/writer of the language for close to 8 years now. I have tutored students, who were native speakers of Spanish, in both English and conducted tutorials in Spanish about papers in English. I can tutor anyone needing beginner to advanced help in Spanish conversation, writing, and reading.
