I've recently retired from 40 years of teaching. Locally, I taught at Washington, Leal, and Yankee Ridge elementary Schools and was directory of one of the State of Illinois' Gifted Area Service Centers. After moving to San Diego I taught for 30 years in elementary (intermediate level) and middle schools. At the middle school level I taught 6th grade math and 7th grade pre-algebra, 6th grade-English, science, and social studies.
Frequently, students just need some individual attention. As a teacher I tried to be available to my individual students before and after school, as well as at lunch, if they wanted to work as a small group. I, also, worked for the YMCA as a tutor for a number of years. I often taught summer school, but I'd much rather reach students before they felt so down and had so many leaning challenges.
I had learning disabilities growing up and I've always thought that experience helped me more sensitive to the needs of struggling students. Sometimes it is just KEY concepts a student is missing, or they need help establishing study habits, or developing organizational skills. Frustration and/or loss of confidence can make it difficult to make the desired progress. I'm willing to do whatever it takes. With your permission, I'd be willing to discuss your child's needs with his/her current needs, so we could more easily develop a plan of action. It's not unusual for students to resist tutoring. I have a lot of patience, experience, and high expectations for all.
All subjects have key concepts that are essential to learn at certain points on the learning spiral. It is important to fill in these gapes, learn to look for and recognize repeating patterns, and practice. I know how frustrating math, writing, and reading can be, if you don't "get it" yet. I'd like to help your child feel more successful. Learning can so empowering. Learning how to learn is not obvious to all students. Let me help.
