Personal Statement

My name is Randy Lewis and I am an enthusiastic teacher-a coach who helps his students learn the skills they need to help themselves. This method seems to work well because my students respond (and improve) when feeling empowered (I taught ecology at the University of Oklahoma for three years while earning my Master's Degree in Zoology). I recently graduated from the University of Oklahoma (spring 2010) with the Zoology Department Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching. I enjoy teaching the life sciences (courses like biology, zoology, ecology, botany, and anatomy), the scientific method, and the statistics needed (SPSS, Microsoft Excel) to conduct scientific research. I have extensive field experience as a wildlife biologist studying: (1) reptiles and amphibians in OK and AZ; (2) birds in OK, TX, and NM; and (3) invertebrates in KS. As such, I can motivate students by showing them pictures (and telling them stories) of how/where they can see cool critters and ask interesting questions about our natural world. For example, I have given talks at local elementary schools (and a high school in AZ) simply to get students excited about science. This "real" approach transforms a potentially dreaded subject into an exciting one. That is why I want to help tutor kids in Oklahoma.
