Personal Statement
I am a recent graduate of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, where I earned a B.S. in Marine Science concentrated in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Religious Studies. My goal is to one day explore the concepts of ocean acidification and how global warming is in turn increasing the pH of the ocean. I have also spent time doing waste water quality testing for estrogens from birth control, recovering dinosaur bones from a dig in Australia, and mapping part of the Great Barrier Reef.
During my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to be a teachers assistant (TA) for three different classes, Marine Invertebrate Biology, Marine and Freshwater Botany, and Ecology. As the TA, I attended all lab classes to help the students with their lab reports, and I helped them with homework assignments and preparing for class tests. I was also part of a non-profit maritime search and rescue team. Part of being an upperclassman leader on the team, meant that I was given an underclassman that was in the marine science field whom I mentored and tutored in whatever classes they needed help in. However, I first started tutoring in high school when I tutored middle school aged students in math and science. I have a love for science and further expanding my knowledge of life around me. Therefore, I will not hesitate to ensure that someone else can also find their own love and desire for science.
I love being outdoors and playing sports. I actively play rugby, hockey, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and golf. My junior and senior years of high school I assisted in coaching middle school girls volleyball, basketball, and soccer at our local private school. I do not claim to be an expert at any of these sports, but if I get a chance to help someone else love them as much as I do, I cannot pass that chance up.
When I tutor I believe that it is important for the student to come to his/her own realization of the problem. Therefore, I do not like to out right tell my students how to work out the problem or even exactly what they are doing wrong. A major part of personal growth is being able to step back, look at the big picture, and explore the possible problems and solutions. I like to help guide my students in order for them to come to this realization. There will be some cases when I must be straightforward, but in the end, I want to ensure that the student understands what was discussed instead of just doing it because I said it was right.
