Personal Statement

Preparing for the TOEFL exam: I will bring you four years of classroom experience preparing adult students for the TOEFL iBT (Internet-based with speaking, listening, reading and writing). I take the fear and mystery away from the speaking and listening sections, and I help with reading techniques and listening practice. Chinese: Learn to converse, read and write in Mandarin Chinese. My coaching in pronunciation, right here in the Antelope Valley, will get you ready to cross the Pacific with confidence. Chinese grammar is the world's easiest (no exaggeration), and the writing is just a matter of spending the hours practicing. Ancient Greek is the best preparation for jobs related to biology or medicine, even technical jobs not requiring associate's or bachelor's degrees: pest control, lab work, nursing, medical/dental/veterinary assisting, medical coding/transcription/billing, etc. A large portion of the technical terms in these fields is drawn from Greek. Knowing some of the language and having enjoyed some of its literature will prevent you from experiencing technical vocabulary as just a bunch of boring, intimidating lists. In my Greek course, you will enter the language through Homer's "Odyssey," where you will find enjoyment and a sense of accomplishment in just one year. I don't sugarcoat the fact that Greek takes work and stick-to-it-iveness in the first year, but I join most Greek language instructors today in taking away the intimidation that was a tragically unnecessary part of the teaching of Greek for 23 centuries. If you are interested in the Greek Bible, I still recommend entering Greek through Homer. It is easy to step from Homer to any other ancient Greek texts but very hard to step from the Greek Bible to anything else in Greek, even the other Jewish and Christian writings from that period of time (my personal and expensive experience). French: I have tutored beginning and intermediate French, and I enjoy unlocking the language for students.
