Personal Statement

I am not a new educator just graduating from college. The value of experience is discovery. In 40 years as a student and a teacher I have discovered three keys an effective tutor must: First, the ability to facilitate motivation; Second, understanding of learner abilities and teaching strategies that match and THEN Third, familiarity with the subject. I promise all three. In High School I was the President of the National Honor Society, Captain of the Speech Team and the Tennis Team and a member of the Math Team, Science Bowl and a television High School Competition called “The High School Quiz”. My success in college included a full tuition scholarship and winning the College National Championship in Informational Speech. During these formative years I learned how to learn and when I graduated I began to teach. Hired as a teacher for a private school is 1987, I taught various High School subjects for 14 wonderful years. During this period I also coached the High School Speech team which won multiple tournaments and titles. The student evaluations and supervisor assessments of my effectiveness uniformly reflected positive interpersonal connections and understanding of student needs. Eventually I decided to leave the classroom environment to train and teach as a Special Education Instructor. This format, emphasizing more individual instruction, allowed me to address and often create Individual Education Plans (IEPs), conduct Peacock Individual Achievement Tests and apply various teaching strategies to empower kinesthetic learners, left brained thinkers and students with deficits in their attention span. I was hired to work with students at risk for failure in school, home and/ or community. I assisted many students to catch up and graduate from high school with their class. Other students needed help in passing the GED or SAT test. It was very rewarding that every student I prepared for the GED passed on their first attempt, and every student I prepared for the SAT was accepted into the college of their choice even though they had fallen behind in school before we began working together. Part of the success I have enjoyed is the combination of my training as a teacher combined with my training in philosophy, sociology and therapeutic activities. I spent one year as the Life Skills Teacher for a residential youth center for ages 12-18 and then facilitated discussions of Life Skills Therapy Groups. While coordinating the therapy groups I trained and certified as an Equine Assisted Learning Instructor. Since 2008 I have been using horses to create the motivation and understanding kids need “buy into” the value of education. The foundation of my success as an educator has always been the process of engaging the student. In the words of Lo-Tsi, “When the student is prepared then the teacher will appear”. I promise to help provide the motivation to prepare the student and then channel that motivation into success.
