Personal Statement

I already have completed four University degrees. In addition, I am an experienced teacher. Indeed, before to start working as a teacher, I completed two Bachelor’s degrees: one in Philosophy and another one in Theology as well as a Master’s degree in Moral Theology. In addition to that, I studied teaching skills, educational methods and teenager’s psychology in order to become a Religious studies teacher/instructor. Besides the training I had, while studying, I taught Religion, Philosophy, French and Social Sciences at High school from 1996 to 2001. What is more, I worked with teenagers often rejected by society as being bad boys and girls. I made use of my skills and education as well as my experience to lead them to improve their morality (ethical behavior) and to become good girls and boys. Moreover, I also have a Master’s degree in Philosophy (completed in Spain). I have an international experience and background. Indeed, My Theological studies were completed in the Catholic University of Kinshasa, which is affiliated to the Belgian Louvain la Neuve University (Belgian studies system); My Bachelor’s degree studies in Philosophy were completed within the framework of French studies system in use in my country the Congo Republic, which is a former French colony. My Master’s degree studies in Philosophy were completed in Spain within the framework of Spanish pedagogical system. Furthermore, I am fluent in three international languages (French: my primary language; Spanish: my second international language; and English: my third international language) and four African dialects. With regard to my Spanish skills, I worked, while completing my Master’s degree studies in Philosophy, as a translator of Philosophical articles from Spanish into French. Concerning English, In addition to British English I studied in my country, I have been, here in the US, studying English since 2004: Instruction and Consulting ESL; Georgia Tech Language Institute; Kaplan Test Prep Center; Georgia State University’s IEP Brief working experience description: I taught French, Philosophy, Social Sciences, and Religion to the two last High School classes. With regard to French, I taught grammar, writing, speaking and reading. Concerning religion, I taught history, some doctrinal classes related to the Virgin Mary, Jesus-Christ, and general subjects. Regarding Philosophy, I taught general knowledge: what is philosophy, its features, and characteristic traits, its history in general: the beginning of philosophy and its development, its relationship with Sciences: how several sciences were born from philosophy and became independent later, the relationship between philosophy and religion: the idea of God in philosophy, philosophy's independence in comparison to religion, the object of philosophy, philosophy and life, study of some philosophers, the specificity of philosophy as a study of the totality of the reality, and so on. With regard to Social Sciences, I taught the definition of social sciences, the different way of defining these sciences: social sciences/ human sciences, the relationship between social sciences and Ethics, social sciences and the study of society and humankind, and so on. While teaching, I basically focused on using the Socratic Method; it consisted of building the daily lesson, or teaching with students by asking them questions. With Refugee Family Services, I have been volunteering since 2006 in tutoring and mentoring refugees’ adolescent children: girls and boys. With other tutors and mentors, we have been leading them to be successful in life in teaching them some social life skills, helping them to do their homework, teaching them how to write essays, and so on. Brief testimony about me: "For the past two years Mr. Bruno Valentin A. has been volunteering with our Youth Empowered for Success Program. The Youth Empowered for Success program provides at risk refugee youth with volunteer tutor/mentor support, enabling students to be more successful in school and to complete their education. Volunteers meet with the students one on one, every Saturday for three hours and work on most critical/challenging school subjects. Volunteers in this program provide an invaluable service to students that desperately need help in enhancement of English language skills, career exploration opportunities, leadership training and social skills development. Mr. A. has proven himself to be an amazing asset to the Youth Empowered for Success Program. During the past two years that I have known him, I have been thoroughly impressed by his dedication and commitment to the program. He is perhaps one of the most dedicated volunteers involved in the Youth Empowered for Success program to date. He arrives on time and prepared for each session with his mentee and keeps me informed of progress and any issues he is having. Beyond this, he seems to show an amazing amount of dedication to the refugee community as a whole, offering his assistance in any other capacity needed by Refugee Family Services. It is my great pleasure to unreservedly endorse Mr. A.’s application with your organization. I believe that his dedicated involvement in the Youth Empowered for Success, paired with his involvement in various other activities centered on the betterment of our world and serving the less fortunate make him a well deserving candidate for this position."
