Personal Statement
Experience:
I am trained through the YSU Writing Center to tutor college-level composition and have experience training students for the English portion of the ACT (I trained myself and earned a 35). I am also a copy editor for the YSU Jambar, which has taught me to identify and correct the smallest of grammar and style mistakes. I have become well-versed in APA, MLA, Chicago, and AP styles throughout my 3 years of college. I received the Hare Award for critical writing last year, hold a 3.94 GPA, and thoroughly enjoy working with students of all ages.
Methods:
In tutoring composition, I work with the student to identify and correct higher order concerns before lower order concerns. Higher order concerns include organization, thesis statements, and strong supporting ideas, which take priority in a tutoring session. Lower order concerns such as grammar and syntax are the finishing touches that we will work on after a strong foundation has been established.
I also work with students to improve their general grammar skills. In these cases, I believe grammar drills and practice in identifying grammatical mistakes are the most useful tools. Explaining why certain rules exist is also helpful in teaching a student to understand, recognize, and fix grammatical errors. I have a firm grasp on the many simple, complex, and debated rules of grammar.
