The Spanish language has originated on the Iberian Peninsula as a descendant of Latin. Today it is has far more speakers in Latin America, having been brought to the New World by Spanish conquistadors. Although there are minor differences in vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation between the Spanish of Spain and the Spanish of Latin America, the differences are not so great as to prevent easy communication.

All nouns in Spanish are either masculine or feminine. There are exceptions to every rule, but in most cases, nouns ending in --o are masculine, and most ending in --a are feminine. When nouns are masculine, the article el or un precedes them. When they are feminine, la or una precedes them: el/un fotógrafo (the/a photographer), la/una familia (the/a family), etc. Adjectives agree in gender and number with the nouns they modify: un fotógrafo famoso (a famous photographer), los fotógrafos famosos (the famous photographers.)

How to Tack a Sailing Boat

Posted on July 27, 2012 on TutorZ Youtube Channel.

Tacking is a sailing maneuver by which a boat turns its bow through the wind. It is analogous to a car turning the wheel to change driving directions (either towards the left or right).

The skipper announces the upcoming tack by alerting his or her crew: "Ready About" or "Come About". The crew mans the sails ready to release the jib sheet. To start the tack the skipper gives the command "Hard to Lee", followed by the helmsman who turns the tiller towards the lee side. (Away from the wind). This action turns the boat with its bow through the wind. When the jib sheet comes over, the crew releases the jib sheet on one side and pulls the new jib sheet in from the other side. The excitement is soon over and the boat now sails smoothly towards its new target.
