"When I was in high school I was in "math survival mode". I had a tutor who helped me get through the math classes, and I remember her kindness and patience. In HS, Math did NOT make sense to me. I did not exactly 'hate' math, but it certainly was not as enjoyable as shop class or art class (I was not great at either of those, but judgement was a little more subjective!) "When I was in high school I was in "math survival mode". I had a tutor who helped me get through the math classes, and I remember her kindness and patience. In HS, Math did NOT make sense to me. I did not exactly 'hate' math, but it certainly was not as enjoyable as shop class or art class (I was not great at either of those, but judgement was a little more subjective!) Then, (thunder clap!) something changed --- the beauty of math, the organization of numbers, the "way things worked" suddenly started to fall into place.

I was not 'destined' to become a math teacher, I 'fell' into it. In 1998 I was prepping to work for two years as a volunteer / missionary in Papua New Guinea, and the director of the school wrote and said "do you want to teach math or science?". "MATH! OF COURSE!" was my reply. I was teaching math to young men in the seminary between the ages of 18 and 26 from a math textbook that was from the 1980's using a mimeograph from the 1960's . . . AND I LOVED IT! That was the beginning of a 20 year career of teaching mathematics, from grade 6 to grade 10 (but mostly grades 7 - 9). The struggles that I had as a student were the same struggles my students had, so I was able to be more understanding of why it was difficult, but also I was able to communicate with those students in a way that built a bridge between where they were and where they needed to go.

Almost every year of teaching I worked after school (before school, lunch break, recess as needed) with students in small groups so that they would have both the tools and the skills to use those tools to become more successful. Every teacher talks about the "A-Ha!!" moment. I always preferred that "A-ha-ha-ha!" moment, using humor as a means to teach.

For me, teaching was always fun, and it was important to me that my students had fun while being challenged. My HS experience allowed me to work with and relate to the student who struggles, but my high expectations and personal drive allowed me to challenge the students for whom math was mor" less...
