"I have taught one year of first grade, ten years of third grade, and the last thirteen years teaching second grade. I have also taught summer school and some one-on-one tutoring.
I use speaking, reading, and writing together to integrate learning. I relate whatever is being studied to everyday life. This gives learning a purpose. I'm motivated as a teacher when my students begin to make connections. I have enough experience to know I will make a difference as your tutor.
I never got math as a student. We seemed to fill our days doing pages filled with equations. I hated it! I have learned methods that make math fun for even me! I understand why kids hate math and I've learned strategies that make it easier. As I tell my second graders, "If I can get it, anyone can!" They almost always do!
I relate whatever my students read to real life situations in their own lives. This makes reading more interesting. Success breeds more interest. As we progress, I use cause/effect, main idea, point of view, etc. to make the reading experience meaningful. Writing becomes more interesting when we consider writer's purpose. We write expecting it to be read. Do we want to educate or inform? How about making a reader laugh, cry, or feel like they can relate? This is how I teach writing.
I teach with enthusiasm. I know what it is like to struggle. I had tutors when I was in high school and I've never forgotten how they helped me. I keep lessons light and fun so we don't even feel like we are working.
