"I’m Chris! I’ve studied the English language and English literature for over a decade now, and had the privilege of teaching college-level composition and literature for over seven years. I graduated summa cum laude from Belhaven University and have continued with my graduate work in English at the University of Dallas. Tutoring is a unique opportunity to get focused teaching that deals with the areas in which you want to improve, and I have found that this one-on-one setting is much more useful than many hours in a large classroom. The moments I found most profound and life-changing in my education were those face-to-face encounters in a teacher's office where the difficult concept or skill finally clicked in a way I could understand. That is the experience of studying English (reading, writing, test prep, etc.) that I hope to offer through tutoring and it guides my methods. The foundation of any good tutoring experience is to consult with a student and identify the core issues, and so I let those issues guide my teaching of the material. Then, I try to give students time to practice and apply the material. The wonderful nature of tutoring is that it can adapt to any students’ need and development, so I try to fit each session to the most immediate needs of a student.

I've been guiding students through the complexities (and frustrations) of English grammar and composition for many years, and have long used tailored guidance as the primary means of helping students identify particular areas of weakness or difficulty and to develop the knowledge, tools, and practice to overcome those and become better writers and readers. For seven years, I also developed and taught a two-year college level Survey of Western Literature course that offered a very broad exposure to a wide set of literary works and have helped many students come to better understand, appreciate (and hopefully love) the wealth of stories and poetry that we inherit.
