"Dear Prospective student:
I have devoted 16 years my professional career, educating children and adults in Flint and Detroit, MI. As the founder of the not for profit organization, I seek to help families put the puzzle of life together by providing: uniquely structured adult education and job training programs, workshops, low income housing and affordable performing arts programs for low income children, in Genesee County. I am a contributing editor to Examiner.com on Urban Education, and also the founder of the Genesee County Master Mind Group. An educator and entrepreneur, Ive earned a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Baker College in Flint, MI; a Master of Arts Degree in Education and Instruction and a Master of Science Administration Certificate in General Administration, both from Central Michigan University. She is completing a Doctorate of Education Degree from Walden University in Administrator Leadership Teaching and Learning in Boston, MA.
Currently, I educate adults 25 and older at a center for higher education achievement. The center was designed to provide professional development sessions, educational and job training for low income adults age 25 and older. The academic programs were created to provide an environment that caters to the true adult learner, which are often over looked, distracted, discouraged, and embarrassed when they attend alternative education programs, along with younger students who also did not complete their high school education. This Center provides a mature academic environment which promotes learning, academic independence, and assist the adult learner in removing previous barriers which occurred during their years as a youth. In , individual, small and lager classroom settings, peer age students encourage one another as they seek to obtain skills for greater job opportunities, ability to assist their children with homework, or for self-gratification. Each Adult Education Program exemplifies challenging, cooperative, comprehensive, and creative fundamentals to learning, aligned to the required Curriculum Framework outlined by the Michigan Department of Education Adult Education. I hold a 100% GED Graduation rate since 2000 and increased adult and ESL students reading and math scores 3 to 6 academic levels.
My greatest reward in life is to posses the ability to effectively communicate a Vision and share information with others. My Mission in the field of teaching is to touch and inspire students to reach their goals, and to see education as a viable tool needed for survival. As an instructor, I’ve learned to embrace that teaching and learning takes place in various methods, according to a student’s learning style. For this reason, I strive to utilize technology and practice Theories such as Constructivism to help eliminate learning barriers, in order to establish greater student success and a trusting professional relationship with students. As a good listener, I’ve often became the student in a learning environment, which has aided me in the ability to bring information together in a cohesive manor when working in a diverse environment.
As an educational leader, I encourage Learning Communities to strengthen communities, build partnership and to share information which will provide assistance to students. Community of Practice is effective when working towards a common goal to educate students regardless of age, race, or gender. Thought out my 16 years of educating children and the adult learner, I continue to obtain knowledge in order to become a greater effective tool for my students and educational staff.
