"At the time of writing this, I have been a professional tutor for over 11 years. Throughout my tutoring career, I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults from all walks of life and academic situations. This includes honors students, remedial students, and everything in between. Below I will go over of the key characteristics that make me the right tutor for you, some of my accomplishments, what you can expect from a session, and my areas of expertise.
-A wealth of tutoring experience (11+ years)
-Patient disposition & reliable
-Mastery of the subject matter (I don’t take jobs that I can’t handle)
-Flexible scheduling (afternoons, evenings, and weekends are available)
-Online tutoring available for emergencies or inclement weather (see Addendum for more)
-Educational Background: Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Philosophy
-Graduate coursework for a Master of Arts in Philosophy
As a quick “highlight reel” of some of my accomplishments, consider the following examples:
•Provided extensive, years-long tutoring, to assist two students in earning bachelor’s degrees (one in Psychology, the other in Business Administration)
•Recently helped three separate students pass their summer college-level Calculus programs
•Worked with an adult student in completing a math program (essentially, college algebra) required for licensure in his career field
•Assisted two different students, for which English was their second language, with the basics of spelling/grammar/punctuation, as well as more advanced topics such as essay and research paper writing, in order to pass their courses
Beyond these successes, I have helped countless students prepare for their next exam, understand a certain concept they missed in a lecture, and complete some extra practice to sharpen their skills. As a standardized test prep tutor, I have been able to routinely improve a student’s cumulative score by at least 2-3 points (ACT), and when working with engaged students, sometimes a full standard deviation (5+ points). Next, I will give you a preview of a normal tutoring session with me.
What You Can Expect:
A typical tutoring session begins with a discussion of any upcoming examinations, pending assignments, and a follow-up on the latest grades. After this we will delve into the current material, where I may explain terms, demonstrate how I would solve the problems, and begin working the student through some of the content. Importantly, I do not complete the student’s homework for them, but I will guide them through similar types of exercises. Before wrapping up the lesson, I like to pose a few challenge problems to the student, in order to gauge their understanding of the material.
All lessons are capped with an overview of the key concepts covered and a game plan for moving forward, in the presence of both the student and parent(s). With me as your tutor, you will get more than just an hour or two of work for your money. I always leave the student with some form of notes and worked-out examples, or I will later send a supplementary packet via email. I have a variety of resources for virtually every concept that I am happy to share. Read on for information on some of my areas of expertise.
Areas of Expertise
My most common subjects are Algebra I/II, Geometry, and ACT Math. I cover all middle school through high school math subjects, including honors & AP courses (e.g., AP Calculus). As for standardized test preparation, I work with all subject areas of the ACT/SAT, as well as the various state tests (e.g., OAT, OGT, etc.). Another one of my areas of specialty is essay writing. I can assist with structuring essays and research papers, brainstorming/conceptualization, research techniques, and, of course, the dreaded citations. There are many other subjects that I cover, and you can review the list below in the “Subjects” section of my profile.
I have worked for multiple agencies, including this one, in addition to my own private practice. For another agency, I worked not only as a tutor, but also as an enrollment counselor and the tutor manager. Suffice it to say, I am well-versed in the tutoring industry, and I am happy to bring my knowledge and expertise to you.
Addendum: Online Tutoring Services
As I mentioned before, I can also provide online tutoring. I regularly take remote work, but I can extend this service to my local clients for convenience, emergencies, or due to inclement weather. I have a graphics tablet and all the other tools and technology required for a superior online tutoring session.
Congrats if you’ve made it this far! I apologize for the length, but I wanted to be thorough and keep you well-informed as to what you are paying for when you hire me." less...
Educational Background: I conducted undergraduate studies at Baldwin-Wallace University from 2002-2006. I double-majored in Economics and Philosophy. Additionally, I completed the Calculus sequence (through Calc III). Then, in 2009 I began working towards a Master of Arts in Philosophy from Cleveland State University. During my graduate studies I worked as a graduate assistant and tutored deductive logic. I realized my passion for tutoring, and I have been doing it ever since.
