"I obtained a doctorate in Microbiology and Immunology in 1996 from the University of Louisville. My graduate work was characterizing the hemolytic activity in the Lyme disease organism. That was followed by several postdoc positions where I repeatedly reinvented myself. In addition to the prokaryotic knowledge from the doctorate, I learned about yeast and protein transport inside the eukaryotic cells. Then I went to the Cancer Center and learned about stem cells and tissue cell cultures. "
