"Tutoring Style------- My goal is to help my students cultivate study habits that will help them become independent learners and achieve their potential. I strive to use the latest neuroscience research in learning and memory. For example, I apply research findings such as those highlighted in the New York Times article on test preparation: "To Really Learn, Quit Studying and Take a Test" by Pam Belluck. Specifically, I work with students to teach them how to identify knowledge gaps and focus on these areas to maximize study time by: • developing question-and-answer format study guides • building a personalized electronic flashcard study program to reinforce material • developing effective visual memory aids Background Information----- I attended Pomona College and majored in Chemistry. Throughout college I worked as a chemistry TA and tutor for the Upward Bound summer program. After college, I was accepted to a 2-year program at the National Institutes of Health Academy in Bethesda Maryland, which has a rigorous curriculum in clinical research and public health. As an NIH Academy student, I worked on a clinical and basic science project with a team of MD/PhDs to better understand the genetics and clinical profile of pheochromocytoma associated with mutations in the succinate dehydrogenase subunit B (SDHB) gene. I am passionate about teaching and have worked for two years at the University of California, Riverside in the Medical and Health Careers program, mentoring students interested in health professions. I am graduating from Stanford Medical School in June 2015 and will be conducting a full year of research (June 2015-June 2016) before entering residency training in Anesthesiology. I have 10 years experience tutoring students (high school and college) and have learned the importance of using problem based learning to solidify knowledge. I am enthusiastic about teaching and adapt to each student's unique learning style." less...
