"Every word we use, from the smallest of conjunctions to the most scholarly adjective impacts the world in some way. They are woven throughout our psyches and tied into our speech. For some, the appreciation and understanding of language comes naturally, but for others it is learned. The process of learning to understand language is often frustrating for the student, simply because it is such a tailored and individual task.

I have had an active tutoring business for four years. My students have ranged from sixth graders in need of help with ELA homework to adult students learning English as a second language. I take a compassionate approach with my students, coming to new topics with patience and humor. That said, I always push them to succeed. I understand that homework and college essay writing is stressful in the best of times, and right now students are under a unique type of stress due to remote learning and COVID-19. I also understand that many parents who have been home with their child for months are looking for a helping hand to ease some of the pressure of working and schooling. I am here to help.

With my college essay students I tailor my lessons to each individual. Some students come to me with completed essays and I work with them to polish the syntax and elevate the language. Others come to me with nothing and we start by going over the prompt and brainstorming together. By the end of the first session the students will have a better grasp of their own essay and a broader understanding of what colleges want to see. To quote one of my students at the end of our first session, "Wow... this was surprisingly super helpful."

With my ELA/History students I usually work with them on an assignment-to-assignment basis and, in weeks where they do not have an assignment, read a relevant book together and discuss or use vocabulary flashcards (depending on grade-level).

I have a degree in Dramatic Writing from NYU and have worked as a freelance theater producer as well." less...
