"As a life-long learner, I believe the role of an educator is to inspire curiosity and creativity. It is so important that our kids have people to support them in their education; it is just as crucial that kids strive to be independent and active in the pursuit of their education.
I emphasize with my students the need for trial and error. Sometimes that means seeing things a few times, from different perspectives, working backwards or inside out. We all learn differently, and that should be celebrated. I aim to help my students discover their learning styles so that we can effectively understand, analyze, and reflect upon complex problems. Ultimately, I view problem solving as a skill we all need in order to better communicate with one another.
For the past 6+ years I have been working full-time as a paraprofessional in my town's middle school and high school. I have worked with students in grades 7-12 in the mainstream and special education tutorial classrooms. My students have a wide array of learning needs, some need remedial support in core academic areas, others need to learn good organizational and study skills, many require assistance with behavior modification, and still more are advanced learners in need of greater challenge. I endeavor to assist my students so that they can achieve academic success, as well as become active participants in their education.
Goal setting is another key component to being successful. Rather than assign goals, I work with my students to determine their strengths and the areas they want to improve. Then, together, we set about creating a plan to realize those goals, one step at a time. Journaling and weekly check-ins have proven invaluable throughout this process, as well as allowing my students to assert control.
