"Hi I’m Samaria I graduated from East Central Oklahoma State University with a Masters in Education. I specifically went to school to become a teacher. I received my Statement of Eligibility from ACT Dallas Teacher Preparation Program. I received Dean’s list honors graduating with a 3.8 GPA. I’m currently a part time Substitute Teacher. This is my first year substituting and I can say it’s been a great experience. I get to teach all grade levels and get accustomed with the grade level I enjoy the most. I have been a tutor for two years now. I was an English tutor in Spain where I helped Spanish speaking students become more fluent with the English language. I was also a reading and vocabulary tutor in Oklahoma. I dealt with students of all ages in one on one and group sessions up to three people. With the younger kids we focused more on their vocabulary and spelling. Vocabulary is tough for the younger students when they’re learning bigger words. With them we practiced spacing out the words with the use of flash cards and cubes, vocabulary games, and songs.

The older kids needed more help with their test prep questions. I incorporated the think, pair, share technique where they reflected on a topic they just read, wrote down what it meant and then shared it with a partner. Often times during sessions I will let the student teach me what they’ve learned. They find this fun to be in charge, I think it’s important that they use their voice because it develops confidence within themselves.

I believe in making learning fun and enjoyable. I never want a student to feel overwhelmed with their studies. I take my time and break down everything and don’t move to the next topic until the previous one is learned. I have a passion for learning and share that with my students. During sessions with my reading students I try my best to encourage them to be critical thinkers by analyzing the text in depth. I incorporate summarization of the text.
