However, I do believe everyone is capable of improvement when they're given attention, support, and realistic goals!
I was a volunteer tutor for elementary school students at the YMCA who were struggling with reading for a year. I also recreationally tutored my friends throughout college with their writing because I genuinely think it's fun! I find it easiest to explain and teach the material initially, move on to providing a lot of examples, and leave plenty of time for questions. With ample time for questions and concerns, it becomes clear what needs to be focused on for an individual student. I often find comparing "bad" and "good" examples makes the connection between theory and practice more apparent in writing. I put quotations around bad and good because I wholeheartedly maintain the belief that there is always room for improvement. The "bad" examples are not inherently bad; they simply need revision! I also believe it's important to remember there are no wrong or bad questions! If something is confusing, then it's confusing. I will never embarrass or shame a student for asking questions they might think are silly. We all have to start somewhere, and nobody is perfect!
I studied Sociology in undergrad, and I did a summer of advanced research on Cultural Theory, with a specific focus on Critical Race Theory. I am also passionate about Gender and took multiple classes on its manifestations.
